Being Responsive

How great are your works, O Lord, how profound your thoughts! The  senseless  man  does  not  know,  fools  do  not  understand… - Ps: 92: 5, 6

The ability to evaluate oneself and take corrective action is an important tool for all of us and if we cannot do that, it is difficult, to genuinely understand and appreciate the effort of others.

Very often assimilation of knowledge and the ability to apply it, is hindered, since our organs have become ‘senseless’. Becoming senseless inhibits our responsiveness. Our Lord narrates the story of the prodigal son who decided to go away from his loving father. When he thought he was far away he decided to spend all that he had on wild living. His was a ‘riches to rags’ story! Finally when he was reduced to taking care of pigs, the Bible says ...He came to his senses - Lk 15: 17.

The sense organs provided to every human being include eyes, ears, tongue, nose, and skin. The sense organs are the pathway for inputs that lead to knowledge, understanding and its application. When sense organs carry wrong inputs, we become insensitive to our surroundings and loose our ability to react correctly. The prodigals return to his father was initiated by his senses which returned and he began to think correctly and his correct actions followed.

The Bible continually emphasizes ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ and often laments eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear. My five year old daughter spends the first fifteen minutes observing any new visitor to our home before getting comfortable enough to go close to them. Yet, when I look all around including my work place, I am very often amazed at the human ability to see and not perceive; to hear and yet not understand. The ability to see and perceive; to hear and understand is what makes us responsive. Perceiving and understanding enables us to react correctly to various situations at work and at home. The ability to critically appreciate is crucial for self-improvement and correction.

Lord, help me to be sensitive to You and responsive to my surroundings.
